Passage 1

Hank Viscardi was born without legs. He had no legs but stumps(残肢) that could be fitted with a kind of special boots. People stared at him with cruel interest. Children laughed at him and called him “Ape Man(猿人)” because his arms practically dragged on the ground.

Hank went to school like other boys. His grades were good and he needed only eight years to finish his schooling instead of the usual twelve. After graduating from school, he worked his way through college. He swept floors, waited on table, or worked in one of the college offices. During all this busy life, he had been moving around on his stumps. But one day the doctor told him even the stumps were not going to last much longer. He would soon have to use a wheel chair.

Hank felt he himself got cold all over. However, the doctor said there was a chance that he could be fitted with artificial legs. Finally a leg maker was found and the day came when Hank stood up before the mirror; for the first time he saw himself as what he had always wanted to be—a man full five feet eight inches tall. By this time he was already 26 years old.

Hank had to learn to use his new legs. Again and again he marched the length of the room, and marched back again. There were times when he fell down on the floor, but he pulled himself up and went back to the endless marching. He went out on the street. He climbed stairs and learned to dance. He built a boat and learned to sail it.

Passage 2

Have you ever thought what your life would be like in old age?

Everyone talks about the aging society with large numbers of elderly people needing home care. Now German researchers have set up a “smart” house programmed to help the elderly live at home with dignity. Scientists at Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute say the house combines existing technology with future-oriented technology.

For example, the “smart” bathroom has a touch screen mirror that can remind people to take their medicine, wash their hands or brush their teeth. The hardware behind Fraunhofer’s electronic bathroom is not new, and the software runs on a regular personal computer.

When the medicine cabinet is opened, a display in the middle of the mirror tells the person how many pills to take. The mirror is linked to a care provider, who can remotely check whether a patient at home is actually taking medicine and brushing his or her teeth. As many elderly people have arthritic(关节炎的) conditions that make it difficult to operate water taps, the mirror also has displays that turn the water tap on or off or control the water temperature.

The bathroom is only the start. Kitchens, bedrooms and all other parts of the “intelligent” home will become “user-friendly” to meet all kinds of individual needs. Sensors in doors, toilets, taps, light switches and carpets detect every activity and record them electronically. Doctors or the care staff can see from the computer records what personal hygiene(卫生) tasks have been completed, how often the elderly person visits the bathroom or uses the toilet. In case of an emergency, the computer automatically alerts the chosen contact person or calls the care center.

Passage 3

In the Harry Potter films, Hermione Granger is better than her male friends and is considered the brightest pupil in her grade. Isn’t it often the same in schools of our real world? A great many boys fall behind their female classmates.

“It’s surprising but true that most of the top students have been girls since the primary school. Girls are class leaders, club presidents and the top ones in exams,” said Wang Feixuan, 15, who studies at a Chengdu school. By any measure, Wang herself is a high achiever. She is a top student, a team leader in her school’s sports club and a winner in many competitions.

But why do so many girls outperform their male peers?

In Sun Yunxiao’s latest book Save Our Boys, he points out that the education system is “more suited to girls, who are good at memorizing and like to sit quietly and read”. Yet he also says that girls have to do so much more when they compete with males for honours, top universities and good jobs. They can feel great pressure nearly every day.

This seems to be the same in most countries in the world. Young women in the United States are also reported to feel the same pressure to be perfect.

“Let’s look at what we ask our teenage girls,” says an American professor Stephen Hinshaw in an interview. He thinks that it’s no longer enough that a girl does well in school and becomes a caring friend. Girls see images of impossible perfection on the TV, on the Internet, and everywhere.Today’s young women must be good learners, good athletes, and fill their after-school lives with other activities. But they’re also asked to have the styles and looks of popular stars. “Be pretty, sweet and nice. Be athletic, competitive and get straight. Be impossibly perfect.” Stephen Hinshaw sums up.

41. The underlined word “outperform”(Para. 3) means ______.

A. mistake B. misunderstand C. ignore D. defeat

42. How does Sun Yunxiao explain the reason why girls perform better than male peers?

A. Girls study harder than boys. B. The education system favours girls.

C. Boys can’t do well under pressure. D. Girls tend to be high achievers.

43. According to the passage, it is true that ______.

A. boys are less smart than girls throughout school life

B. boys usually don’t have so much pressure as girls do

C. girls are all fond of the Chinese education system

D. girls are better at school because boys don’t work hard

44. The passage suggests that ______.

A. our society asks far too much of teenage girls

B. teenage girls shouldn’t be so perfect at school

C. boys are always lazy ones rather than girls

D. American girls have less pressure than Chinese girls

45. What’s the best title for the passage?

A. Impossibly Perfect Is Possible B. Why Are Girls So Perfect?

C. Perfect: Pressure for Girls D. Perfect: Boys or Girls?

Passage 4

Child maltreatment is a global problem with serious lifelong consequences. There are no reliable global estimates for the prevalence of child maltreatment. Data for many countries, especially low and middle-income countries, are lacking.

Child maltreatment is complex and difficult to study. Current estimates vary widely depending on the country and the method of research used. Nonetheless, international studies reveal that approximately 20% of women and 5% to 10% of men report being sexually abused as children, while 25% to 50% of all children report being physically abused. Additionally, many children are subject to emotional abuse (sometimes referred to as psychological abuse).

Every year, there are about 31,000 homicide deaths in children under 15. This number underestimates the true extent of the problem, as a significant proportion of deaths due to child maltreatment are incorrectly attributed to falls, burns and drowning.

Child maltreatment causes suffering to children and families and can have long-term consequences. Maltreatment causes stress that is associated with disruption in early brain development. Extreme stress can impair the development of the nervous and immune systems. Consequently, as adults, maltreated children are at increased risk for behavioural, physical and mental health problems. Via the behavioural and mental health consequences, maltreatment can contribute to heart disease, cancer, suicide and sexually transmitted infections.

Beyond the health consequences of child maltreatment, there is an economic impact, including costs of hospitalization, mental health treatment, child welfare, and longer-term health costs.

A number of risk factors for child maltreatment have been identified. These risk factors are not present in all social and cultural contexts, but provide an overview when we attempt to understand the causes of child maltreatment.

It is important to emphasize that children are the victims and are never to blame for maltreatment. A number of characteristics of an individual child may increase the likelihood of being maltreated, such as being either under four years old or an adolescent, being unwanted, failing to fulfill the expectations of parents and having special needs, crying persistently or having abnormal physical features.

46. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. 20% of women got sexually and physically abused in their childhood.

B. 25% to 50% of all children were reported to have been physically abused.

C. 25% to 50% of children were psychologically abused.

D. 60% to 75% of children were neglected by their parents.

47. The word “underestimates” in Paragraph 3 means ______.

A. exaggerates B. points out C. assumes D. miscalculates

48. Child maltreatment can bring all the following consequences EXCEPT ______.

A. stress B. suicide C. heart disease D. poor memory

49. How many aspects are included in the economic consequences due to child maltreatment?

A. Costs of hospitalization and mental health treatment.

B. Child welfare and longer-term health costs.

C. Tuition fees.

D. Both A and B.

50. Children are more likely to be maltreated if they ______.

A. cry a lot B. are not good-looking

C. are over 4 years old D. are quiet

【精析】A分析句子结构可知,scheduled______ at 9 a.m. be scheduled to do sth. 故选A。

be able to意为“会,能够”,所以A项形式不正确。故选C。

故选A。

【精析】D no matter when相当于whenever,意为“无论何时”;whether意为“是否”,一般不与no matter连用;no matter what相当于whatever,意为“无论什么”,其后常跟名词或动词;no matter how相当于however,意为“无论如何”,其后常跟形容词或副词。

【精析】B by the time意为“到……

【精析】A强调句型的基本结构为:It is/was+被强调部分+that/who+其他。 故选A。

【精析】B在“It is required/demanded/proposed/advised...+主语从句”句型中,主语从句要用虚拟语气,即谓语动词应用“should+动词原形”的形式,should可以省略。

【精析】A by the time意为“到…… 故选A。

Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension

Passage 1

【精析】C根据第一段最后一句“Children laughed at him and called him ‘Ape Man’ because his arms practically dragged on the ground.”

【精析】A根据第一、二段和第三段倒数第二句“...for the first time he saw himself as what he had always wanted to be—a man full five feet eight inches tall.” 故选A。

【精析】D根据最后一段第一句“...he talked the Red Cross into giving him a job.” 其中,talk sb. into doing sth.

【精析】A根据最后一段第二、三句“He took the regular training. He marched and trained along with the other soldiers.” 故选A。

Passage 2

【精析】A根据第三段第一句“...the ‘smart’ bathroom has a touch screen mirror that can remind people to take their medicine, wash their hands or brush their teeth.” 故选A。

【精析】D根据最后一段第二句“Sensors in doors, toilets, taps, light switches and carpets detect every activity and record them electronically.”

根据最后一段第二句“Kitchens, bedrooms and all other parts of the ‘intelligent’ home will become ‘user-friendly’ to meet all kinds of individual needs.” 故选A。

Passage 3

【精析】D根据第一段最后一句“A great many boys fall behind their female classmates.”和第二段前两句“...most of the top students have been girls...the top ones in...”

【精析】B根据第四段第一句“...he points out that the education system is ‘more suited to girls, who are good at memorizing and like to sit quietly and read’.”

【精析】B根据第四段倒数第二句“...girls have to do so much more when they compete with males for honours...”

根据第五段最后一句“Young women in the United States are also reported to feel the same pressure to be perfect.” 故选A。

Passage 4

【精析】B根据第二段第三句“Nonetheless, international studies reveal that approximately 20% of women and 5% to 10% of men report being sexually abused as children, while 25% to 50% of all children report being physically abused.”

【精析】D根据第三段“Every year, there are about 31,000 homicide deaths in children under 15. This number underestimates the true extent of the problem, as a significant proportion of deaths due to child maltreatment are incorrectly attributed to falls, burns and drowning.”

【精析】D根据第四段第二句“Maltreatment causes stress that is associated with disruption in early brain development.”可知,虐待会产生压力,所以可排除选项A;根据第四段最后一句“Via the behavioural and mental health consequences, maltreatment can contribute to heart disease, cancer, suicide and sexually transmitted infections.”

【精析】D根据第五段“Beyond the health consequences of child maltreatment, there is an economic impact, including costs of hospitalization, mental health treatment, child welfare, and longer-term health costs.”

【精析】A根据最后一段最后一句“A number of characteristics of an individual child may increase the likelihood of being maltreated, such as being either under four years old or an adolescent, being unwanted, failing to fulfill the expectations of parents and having special needs, crying persistently or having abnormal physical features.” 故选A。

故选A。

Dear Mary,

I’ve come back home safely. Looking back on my stay in Britain, I feel so happy and satisfied. The beautiful scenery and friendly people impressed me a lot. I also benefited a lot from learning together with local students. By the way, attached to the letter are two photos taken with you, which I believe will remind you of the happy time we spent together. Would you like to make a trip to China? If so, please let me know as soon as possible. I can’t wait to meet you soon and show you around the places of interest. I’m sure you won’t regret it.
